Back Online at Long Last!

Well, after lightening bolts caused a power outage that killed my websites last Sunday, I am happy to report that today - an entire week later - I am finally back online again! Hurrah!

(...yes, I know - but I just had to break out the vintage dancing bananas for this one...)

Now it's time to finally finish various website updates I started working on back in June, begin showing this Doodle Diary some love again at last - and maybe even finally manage to influence the movements of the Universe enough so that my MildredLovesYou.com domain is finally (FINALLY!!!) back in working order as well. Wish me luck!

Lightening Bolts Killed My Websites!

My LaLaVoxBox and MildredLovesYou websites are hosted on a server system run by Amazon in Ireland. There was a major power outage on Sunday apparently caused by lightening. Since I am not well versed in server-speak I don't know exactly what's going on at this point, but what I do know is that my website has been offline since Sunday!

I don't suppose it matters too much, since I don't run high-powered, financially important sites - and also since I've sort of been on a mental vacation away from my websites and Doodle Diary since our big MildredLovesYou anniversary/birthday bash back in mid-June - but I still find it quite distressing!

I know that I will absolutely not have time for new Doodles today (my Doodle well seems a tad dry at the moment anyway). But here's something I've had lying around as a draft for a while, wondering if I should actually post it or not. Since there will be no new (or old) Doodles today I've decided to go ahead and post it after all:

Alright... This has nothing to do with Doodles or doodling, but since my Mildred Loves You blog seems even less like the right place for this post, I will deposit it here...

Once upon a time one of my cousins asked me to draw a portrait of a cat of hers who was getting on in years. I did several from photos she sent, but wasn't happy with any of them really.

They are hanging on my cousin's walls though, and looking at the photocopies I made of them back in the day (while sorting through boxes recently), I've decided they're not really all that awful after all.

The following are scans of these photocopies...

And here is a series of mutant animal "mash-ups" from even further back in my foggy past. It was so long ago in the meantime that I'll spare you the details. Don't ask, just look at the pictures... ;)

The drawing materials used for these animal "mashups", by the way, were a Rapidiograph technical pen (the 0.18 nib - if I'm remembering correctly), a no.2 pencil, layout markers, and white bleedproof gouache (for some of the the highlights).

Doodling Again: Day 50 (Rejects!)

...My Pentel GFKP Refillable Pocket Kanji Fude Brush Pen, by the way, is apparently not frayed after all, but was only slightly clumped after being somewhat dried out (I guess). The line has become nice and smooth again.

But I still can't draw worth crap this evening - in spite of what should be inspiring brush-stroke smoothness.

I think I have mentioned before that my Doodles are done with no pre-planning and no models, so it's not often that the first Doodle that escapes from my pen or pencil also makes it onto this blog.

But I'm exhausted at the moment, so tonight you get these 2 rejects instead of new People-Doodles...

Doodling Again: Day 46 (with a vintage pencil)

Two new People-Doodles:

This first new People-Doodle was drawn with an honest-to-goodness vintage pencil; an Eagle Turquiose 4B (U.S.A. Quality Control No. 82056). According to the website I found while Googling for it, it must have been produced sometime during the 1970s: if you scroll down a bit you can find it at this page of the Leadholder Drafting Pencil Museum.

And here's my rather dreadful scan of the actual pencil in question:

I have no idea why I have this pencil. I'm assuming it once belonged to my dad, and that he never used it because he's an H-pencil kinda guy; not the sort of fellow who would use a B-pencil at all. This would mean that this pencil has been with me for years and years and years, traveling with me from Mississippi, USA to Berlin, Germany in various boxes or other, to eventually land in a drawer next to my desk lying in wait to be used by me at long last. I can't recall ever having used it before. Ever.

But enough of that! Let's move on to today's 2nd new Doodle of the Day...

For this 2nd new People-Doodle I simply used my tried-and-true uni-ball eye (fine) pen once again... ;)

And now the old Creature-Doodle of the Day (one of my favorites)...

The LaLaVox Box - "The Sea, The Sea"

As I posted yesterday, Achim Treu (aka UFO Hawaii) and I are collaborating on a little musical project together with Lorelei Vanora and Carolyn Turgeon.

We (as The LaLaVox Box) are in the process of writing, recording, + producing a series of nautical tunes featuring vocals by Ms. Vanora and designed especially to be presented at Carolyn's "I Am A Mermaid" blog. She has just presented the first of these today, and has said that it's fine with her if I present a copy of her sparkly + glamorous post here. So without further ado...

So as I lovingly mentioned on Friday, I have a gorgeous little mermaid ditty to share with youse and am doing so fashionably late because I am very glamorous.

So you have seen Ms. Lorelei Vanora. And here's the rest of The LaLaVox Box, who are very good looking, which sometimes you have to be to hang out with mermaids in fashion-forward cities like Berlin, Germany:

And here is their sweet and sumptuous song, "The Sea, The Sea," sung by one real-life mermaid, making its debut. Just be careful you keep your head about you and don't start crashing any ships as you listen.

Doodling Again: Day 43 (having run out of Doodle-Gallery People-Doodles)

My general practice for my posts so far has been to always post either a new Creature-Doodle and an old Creature-Doodle together, or a new People-Doodle and an old People-Doodle together (for the business-as-usual part, that is).

Unfortunately, although I have not yet run out of old People-Doodles, I have run out of old People-Doodles that are already numbered, scanned, and included in the online gallery.

I didn't get past #P15 back in the day, and the gallery has remained that way ever since, while other web-site things happened and grew around it.

Since I simply don't have the time these days for major website updating, I will, for the time being, always post an old Creature-Doodle for every new Doodle - whether it be the Creature or the People variety! :P ;)

...And, yes - before we continue - just so you know - today's new People-Doodle was drawn with a uni-ball eye (fine) pen. And I was, by the way, also thinking a bit about one Xanthippe Svanström and her imagery and interests as I drew this one. ;) (Thank you for inspiring me, my Dear.) Shall we?...

The LaLaVox Box (a music project)

So... I've just put together a little web page about a music project that Achim Treu (aka UFO Hawaii) and I are calling The LaLaVox Box:

This is the project that I was hinting around about (or posting something related to) before closing my Doodling Again: Day 28 (with a Mermaid Bonus) + Doodling Again: Day 40 (with a Mermaid Bonus) posts.

We decided it would be nice to do a nautical album - posting one song a month for the next year or so. And we have the pleasure of being able to add Lorelei Vanora and Carolyn Turgeon (with her "I Am A Mermaid" blog) into the mix as well!

In a past post, I said that in the future I thought I would probably be posting mermaidy stuff more over at my "Mildred Loves You" blog, but it looks as though at least The-LaLaVox-Box-oriented mermaidy stuff has found its home here instead.

...The brush tip of my Pentel GFKP pen (which I've used for all of the previous new People Doodles posted this month) seems to have gotten a bit frayed in the meantime, and it's not giving me those smooth + juicy brush strokes that I like so much. So, I thought I'd draw today's Doodle with something else. Today's weapon of choice is an edding 1800 profipen 0.1.

By the way... Some of the old Doodles (dated 2001) were drawn before 2001. This one (#P14) is a good example of one that was scribbled on a corner of paper well before 2001. They are dated 2001 because that's the year I had the idea to begin collecting and numbering the little collection of doodles that had been piling up in my archive bit by bit over the years. ;)

Since the 2001 beginnings however, I've made an effort to number the Doodles in chronological order according to the order in which they've made their escape from my pencils and pens...

Doodling Again: Day 40 (with a Mermaid Bonus)

Dear me! It's been another mad day of racing and panting, just like yesterday - so this is the 2nd late-in-the-day Daily Doodle in a row.

On a less hectic note, it's also been a very mermaidy day today. Which is why today's new People-Doodle is actually a Mermaid-Doodle.

Unfortunately though, I don't have a Mermaid category in my Doodle Gallery. And since I don't feel convincingly enough inclined to put her into the Creature-Doodle category, the label "People-Doodle" will simply have to do.

...More about why today is a mermaidy day below, by the way. But first, the business-as-usual stuff...

And today the aforementioned Carolyn Turgeon (aforementioned on Day 28 that is) has blogged in sparkly and delightful ways about one Lorelei Vanora (The Singing Mermaid). She mentioned yours truly as well (introducing upcoming musical activities hinted at back on the aforementioned Day 28)... :P ;)

So now swim with great haste to Carolyn's I Am A Mermaid blog and see the giggly goodness contained in her "Berlin’s Singing Mermaid, Lorelei Vanora" post!

Doodling Again: Day 37 (last Daily Doodle post until next week)

I've been pretty pleased with the fact that I've actually been keeping up with the daily pace since beginning this Doodling Again series back at the end of March (with only April 1st deliberately skipped and a couple of days missed during the Pictoplasma Festival). But I'm going have to take a week-long break now.

For one thing, my Pentel GFKP Refillable Pocket Kanji Fude Brush Pen is in the process of running out of ink at the moment - as can be evidenced by the lack of nice juicy solid blacks in the brush strokes of today's (below) and yesterday's People-Doodles.

I could of course just use another pen for my People-Doodles (I do switch the pens I use back and forth quite a bit with my Creature-Doodles). But I've fallen in love with the Pentel GFKP, and besides that, I will be leaving town for a week on Wednesday anyway, and have tons of other stuff to take care of between now and then.

So this will be my last Daily Doodle post until around Tuesday (the 17th) or Wednesday (the 18th) of next week. Here 'tis:

And now... Let me take this opportunity to state the rather obvious fact that I am a big fan of the classic bob-cut.

I would have this cut myself - if my hair would do it without gobs of hair-care products and a lot of energy!!! >:( - But I am the sort of girl who is only willing to wash, condition, towel dry, and comb my hair, and not much else. So I have had to give bobs to various creations and an alter ego of mine instead.

This post was sparked by online buddies yesterday mentioning liking the fact that I was, "pumping out new sketches." I replied thus:

Thank you!!! I'm noticing it doing me a lot of good too - keeping up with the routine of doing one every single day. The Doodles are quick to do, so it works. The rules are: no prior planning + no preliminary sketching. I simply put the brush [pen, pencil, etc...] to paper and draw. If it's crap it gets thrown out. If I like it, it lands on the blog. Sometimes the first one works. Sometimes I have to do 3 or 4 before I get a good one. :) xx - LLV

...Oh, and rule 3 - no model! ;)

‎...If there's a model, it's not a Doodle as such anymore, but a sketch. :)

One could philosophically argue, of course, that the models are in my head; which can only be true, obviously. But I never doodle with a model or photo directly, physically in front of me. ;)

I have been concentrating mainly on Creature-Doodles since bringing this blog back to life back at the end of March.

There were of course People-Doodles included within the sketchbook pages I was adding here for a while, but with no real focus on them in particular. I will begin focusing on People-Doodles in particular a bit more in May.

As a sort of introduction to this intention I'd like to share some things that went on yesterday evening.

I sat down looking for an approach for little mermaid illustration I wanted to do for a project that Künstler Treu and I have up our sleeves. I wanted to find an approach that would be simple and relatively quick to do, and I thought basing it on the way my Doodles come into being might be a nice way to start.

So, I took out my Pentel GFKP Refillable Pocket Kanji Fude Brush Pen, and began doodling...

The above People-Doodles are the four most visually pleasing of a multitude of brush scribbles that helped lead up to this:

And this is a preview of one element of the-little-something that Künstler Treu and I have up our sleeves - which will involve a certain authoress by the name of Carolyn Turgeon...

...Who already had a great deal to do with this heavily mermaidy "Mildred Loves You" blog post from the beginning of this year.

Obviously I will be posting more mermaidy stuff in the future, but probably mostly over at my Mildred blog rather than here at this blog... ;)

...By the way... This is the 2nd time it's happened that the new Doodle of the day has ended up having a similarity with the old Doodle of the day. The first time it happened was on Day 13 - where the new and old Doodle both turned out to be running Doodles. Today, a bird theme has happened.

I didn't plan this. I don't look to see which old Doodle is next in line before I draw the day's new Doodle. I just draw the Doodle, and when I upload it for the blog, I then hotlink the next old Doodle in line (from the Doodle Gallery at my website) by simply changing to the next number, and what comes up in the browser when I preview it is a surprise (since I don't know my Gallery's chronology by heart - at least not consciously). It's kinda fun for me when this happens. ;)

On Friday I tried to create a Bunny-Doodle, but had to settle for a cat-like Doodle instead. Out of bunny-frustration, I posted these two Bunny-Doodles from the past:

Today's attempt was successful enough to make it into this post, but it wasn't the first attempt I made today. Here it is again, but this time surrounded with previous attempts and later filler-bunnies (for the purpose of venting left over bunny irritation)...

I guess the moral of this story is; Doodles simply can't be planned. It defies the very definition of a doodle:

...I had wanted to doodle a bunny today, because of the Easter holidays. But Doodles (since they are drawn with no pre-planning whatsoever, and seem, therefore, to appear more or less out of nothing) either appear fully formed or they don't. Today's bunny attempt was a failure - which is why today's new cat-like Doodle is the one you're now seeing above instead. To try and make up for this, I will now post two Bunnies from my Doodling past:

Perhaps today's bunny failed because it is Good Friday and not Easter Sunday. I will make a new bunny attempt on Easter Sunday. ;)

The Origin of All Creature-Doodles (And Other Toys)

In my "Doodling Again: Day 16" post yesterday I included this old Creature-Doodle from my Doodle Gallery archives:

This Doodle was drawn spontaneously out of my head one day, but it's direct inspiration has been with me since childhood. Doodle C17 is basically an interpretation of this toy, which I have kept with me for all of these years. All of the Creature-Doodles in my Doodle Gallery are probably direct or indirect descendants of this very toy:

I have no idea who designed it or where it came from. I have vague memories of a tiny fun park and zoo in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA that my Grandfather Smith used to take my brothers and me to when we were all very small. We got things like fat pink candy-wax lips you could wear until they were chewed through, chewable candy-wax pop bottles with colored liquid inside, and straws full of colored sugar. We occasionally got small toys there too. This rubbery critter of unknown origin may well have been bought for me at this half-remembered place.

The glitter, by the way, is not part of the original design of the toy. It's rubbery surface is a tiny bit gummy, and stuff does tend to get stuck to it. ;)

If anyone out there happens to ever have seen this vintage toy before, I'd get a kick out of hearing about it. =)

In Love With The Missing Link

Each Pictoplasma festival and conference has its own underlying theme. The 2011 theme was The Missing Link. Pictoplasma yetis could be seen running around the city from time to time leading up to the festival itself - especially on the day of The Character Walk.

I fell completely in love with these softly rustling and irresistibly swishy creatures! (Too bad the video of me hugging one didn't save properly...) I love the way they look, sound, and move. Here is a small collection of video footage of them:

Doodling Again: Day 10 (Sketchbook Shame)

Doodles are coming in this post, but I will indulge myself with much text first... Blah, blah, blah...

...Why "Sketchbook Shame"? Well, mostly because I hardly ever use my sketchbook.

During my years as a student, when it was expected of me that I carry a sketchbook with me everywhere I went, I did - but wrote in it much more often than I drew in it. At the time, it often seemed more interesting to me to paint my surrounding in words rather than in drawings.

I hardly use my sketchbook these days either.

One of our most faithful Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School Berlin patrons - a fellow named Michael - has his with him at all times, and whips it out like a photographer whips out his camera, to record his surroundings.

And then there are all of those wonderfully prolific and inspiring artists who speak to us at Pictoplasma festivals and conferences, and show us pages from their sketchbooks - which are filled with their genius scribbles and concepts-in-progress.

I do neither of these things. I indulge in life-drawing once in a blue moon (in spite of the fact that I co-host the Berlin branch of that life-drawing-meets-cabaret/burlesque extravaganza Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School). And I generally don't even doodle in my sketchbook either.

I draw stuff on sheets and bits of paper. Maybe I respect the bound nature of Moleskines and other sketchbooks too much. This finished quality of the object makes me feel weirdly unworthy to fill it with my unfinished thoughts - since I can only know afterward whether I consider my images worthy of being included in a bound book, I guess...

During Pictoplasma events I have simply forced myself to ignore this stifling little demon in my brain, and have sat doodling into an actual sketchbook during any of the talks that were well lit enough to allow it. The doodles that have ended up on these pages along the way have either been directly, indirectly, or not at all influenced by the artist speaking.

I posted 2011 and 2009 examples of these pages this past Friday. I will post some more in this post forthwith. And, although I will return to my Post-It-sized Creature Doodle format for the posts that follow this one, I will continue posting sketchbook pages too; by tacking a couple of them at the end of each of my regular Doodle posts.

I remember when Pictoplasma was still a glob of goo in a Petri dish; little more than an idea, represented by a new domain address with one animated gif jiggling a little dance at us from a bit of HTML code.

The 1st Pictoplasma book was published in 2001, and ended up becoming a sort of must-have coffee-table encyclopedia of modern character design. Some of my Creature Doodles where included in this first publication (as well as being featured at an earlier version of its - by then - much expanded Pictoplasma website).

And then, in 2004, the first-ever Pictoplasma Conference pressed its large footprints into the concrete and soil of my beloved Berlin. This international event filled four sleep-deprived, euphoric, Utopian days with trance-inducing input-overload.

The conferences and festivals since then have never had the emotional impact on me that this first conference did, but they are still magic, not-to-be-missed happenings.

And I've found that Pictoplasma trailers, ads, and screening-openers have often managed to capture tiny, encapsulated versions of the feeling that these events seem to inspire in me; a mysterious and sublime quality that always draws me in. Here are some examples...

Happy Birthday To Me....

...Yes, today is my birthday. And this 2nd blogger blogspot is a birthday present from me to myself.

It might seem a bit silly to start a 2nd blogspot, seeing as I've had so little time for my first blogspot (Mildred Loves You) in the past several months. But I thought it would be nice to have a space to publish drawing stuff that has nothing in particular to do with burlesque or Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School Berlin or MildredLovesYou.com...

So, welcome to The LaLaVox Doodle Diary; a blog inspired by my Doodle Gallery over at LaLaVoxBox.com.

The Doodle Gallery, and LaLaVoxBox.com, are loooooooooong over due for an update (any time I've had left over for update activities in the past couple of years has been focused on MildredLovesYou.com), but perhaps this blog will soon inspire me to show my old site a little love again at long last.

In the meantime, I have finally gotten around to getting acquainted with that online drawing code thingamajiggy called Scribbler Too. It's a very, very nice place for doodling, and I've collected a whole folder of Scribbler Too doodles in the meantime.

This has inspired me to want to update my Doodle Gallery for the first time in Heaven knows how many years (I'm afraid to check and see how long it's actually been, as it's likely I could have born and raised a toddler or two in the time that's expired since the last update). But as a prequel to any updating I might get around to doing, I'll just go ahead a publish a couple of them here + now: i.e. - right this minute!

Let's see how long it takes me to get them numbered and integrated into the Doodle Gallery along with all of the rest of the best-of Doodles that have happened and been collected for future reference since that last long-ago update. ;)

Oh, and before I go: what's in a name? - right?...

...People have asked me from time to time where my online name, LaLaVox, came from. Long ago and far away, back in the days when I was still living in Mississippi, a friend of mine named Mark D. - apparently fatigued by ennui of having to call me Laura all the time - started calling me LaLa instead. It caught on for some reason, and soon almost everyone in our circle of friends was calling me LaLa. Later, when I was looking around for an online name, I decided to pop Vox on the end of it, and there it was: LaLaVox (aka Miss LaLaVox).

And I - like, I imagine, anyone else involved in the arts in one way or another - have indulged in vanity Googling now and again. Recently I indulged in the ultimate in vanity Googling and set up a Google Alert for "LaLaVox". The very first alert that fluttered into my email inbox was fan art for a pink-and-white-striped homicidal bunny character named Miss Lala Vox. This sent me off on a search that led me to a gamer profile over at Gaia Online. It feels weird to see someone else using my name - and to see that fellow gamers have made fan art of her to boot:

This feeling reminds me - in a rather irritating way - of the feeling I get when I hear other people sing lyrics that I wrote; either because I wrote the lyrics specifically for them, or because they covered a song of ours - which doesn't irritate me at all by the way, but still feels slightly odd none-the-less.

A feeling which also reminds me a bit of the time Dauerfisch (back in the days when Dauerfisch still existed) used snippets of some of my vocals as samples to be played on a drum pad by their fabulous tour drummer, Andrew McGuinness. He would hit those drum pads with his drumsticks, and my voice would come leaping out of them like popcorn. Hearing my own voice separated from me like that, and manipulated in such non-vocal ways, left me with this funny little tickling sensation in my tummy - as if Andrew were hitting my tummy with the drumsticks instead of the drum pads.

I guess what I'm trying to get at here is this: that it's very odd for me to see things I created appear in places that have little or nothing to do with me, or see them interpreted by someone other than myself. Famous folks must get used to that after a while, but I guess I haven't become desensitized to it yet.

And I'm also left wondering how it came about that this mysterious (and, I'm assuming, very young) gamer came to name her pink-and-white-striped homoicidal bunny, Miss Lala Vox.

But all right then. That's enough of me for now - even if it is my birthday, and I'm left with assorted questions about various things. I'll post more Doodles soonish. And I promise that there will be much less blabbing and much more drawing next time around. ;)
