Doodling Again: Day 50 (Rejects!)

...My Pentel GFKP Refillable Pocket Kanji Fude Brush Pen, by the way, is apparently not frayed after all, but was only slightly clumped after being somewhat dried out (I guess). The line has become nice and smooth again.

But I still can't draw worth crap this evening - in spite of what should be inspiring brush-stroke smoothness.

I think I have mentioned before that my Doodles are done with no pre-planning and no models, so it's not often that the first Doodle that escapes from my pen or pencil also makes it onto this blog.

But I'm exhausted at the moment, so tonight you get these 2 rejects instead of new People-Doodles...

...Um... Hm. As I was posting these Achim came in and asked me why the left one is a reject. Well, alright then; the left one is a new People-Doodle and the right one is a reject. How 'bout that? :P ;)

By the way... Some of the old Doodles (dated 2001) were drawn before 2001. This one (#P14) is a good example of one that was scribbled on a corner of paper well before 2001. They are dated 2001 because that's the year I had the idea to begin collecting and numbering the little collection of doodles that had been piling up in my archive bit by bit over the years. ;)

Since the 2001 beginnings however, I've made an effort to number the Doodles in chronological order according to the order in which they've made their escape from my pencils and pens...

Doodle Rules

This post was sparked by online buddies yesterday mentioning liking the fact that I was, "pumping out new sketches." I replied thus:

Thank you!!! I'm noticing it doing me a lot of good too - keeping up with the routine of doing one every single day. The Doodles are quick to do, so it works. The rules are: no prior planning + no preliminary sketching. I simply put the brush [pen, pencil, etc...] to paper and draw. If it's crap it gets thrown out. If I like it, it lands on the blog. Sometimes the first one works. Sometimes I have to do 3 or 4 before I get a good one. :) xx - LLV

...Oh, and rule 3 - no model! ;)

‎...If there's a model, it's not a Doodle as such anymore, but a sketch. :)

One could philosophically argue, of course, that the models are in my head; which can only be true, obviously. But I never doodle with a model or photo directly, physically in front of me. ;)

Doodling Again: Day 22 (Bunny Attempt Successful?)

...And now on to the bunny dilemma...

On Friday I tried to create a Bunny-Doodle, but had to settle for a cat-like Doodle instead. Out of bunny-frustration, I posted these two Bunny-Doodles from the past:





Today's attempt was successful enough to make it into this post, but it wasn't the first attempt I made today. Here it is again, but this time surrounded with previous attempts and later filler-bunnies (for the purpose of venting left over bunny irritation)...



I guess the moral of this story is; Doodles simply can't be planned. It defies the very definition of a doodle:

The Origin of All Creature-Doodles (And Other Toys)

In my "Doodling Again: Day 16" post yesterday I included this old Creature-Doodle from my Doodle Gallery archives:



This Doodle was drawn spontaneously out of my head one day, but it's direct inspiration has been with me since childhood. Doodle C17 is basically an interpretation of this toy, which I have kept with me for all of these years. All of the Creature-Doodles in my Doodle Gallery are probably direct or indirect descendants of this very toy:



I have no idea who designed it or where it came from. I have vague memories of a tiny fun park and zoo in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA that my Grandfather Smith used to take my brothers and me to when we were all very small. We got things like fat pink candy-wax lips you could wear until they were chewed through, chewable candy-wax pop bottles with colored liquid inside, and straws full of colored sugar. We occasionally got small toys there too. This rubbery critter of unknown origin may well have been bought for me at this half-remembered place.



The glitter, by the way, is not part of the original design of the toy. It's rubbery surface is a tiny bit gummy, and stuff does tend to get stuck to it. ;)

If anyone out there happens to ever have seen this vintage toy before, I'd get a kick out of hearing about it. =)
